About the event

At the Alliance April meeting hosted by the Oakmont Progressives Club, the CA Working Families Party will come to Oakmont to explain who they are, what they stand for, and how they propose to fix our political system, which they see as problematic and dysfunctional.

We will meet in the East Rec Center on Monday, April 14, with our usual social at 6:30 and the presentation/discussion at 7 PM.

The Working Families Party is regular people coming together across our differences to make a better future for us all. They're a multiracial party that fights for workers over bosses and people over the powerful.  They work for an America which realizes the promise – unrealized in our history – of freedom and equality for all.  The Party is funded entirely by its members, worker organizations and donations – it does not accept corporate money, PAC money or dark money.

The speakers are popular and familiar faces in Oakmont – they’ve come to talk with us about local and national issues a number of times.

  • Marty Bennett, Instructor Emeritus of History at Santa Rosa Junior College, UNITE HERE Local 2, and member North Bay Working Families Party organizing committee

  • Una Glass, Executive Director Sonoma County Conservation Action and chair North Bay Working Families Party organizing committee

  • Eric Vasquez, President, Wine Country Young Democrats and member North Bay Working Families Party organizing committee

The Party has been active in many states across the country for some years, and has elected candidates to local, state and national offices (Bernie Sanders ran in 2020 on the Working Families Party ballot in New York, for Example).

“We believe that no matter where we come from or what our color, most of us want the same things. We want to earn enough to thrive, not just survive, and leave a better future for our kids. We want healthy food and clean water, safe neighborhoods and a safe world. We want to be free,” said Marty Bennett, a member of the Organizing Committee for the North Bay Chapter.  “But the richest people on Earth — and the political insiders who serve them — have rigged the rules of our economy and our democracy to grab up wealth and power for themselves. They have defunded our schools, undermined community services, and stripped working people of the right to organize into unions. And then they blame poor people or people of different races or different places — aiming to divide us and distract us from what we have in common.”

All are welcome.  We begin with a social, so feel free to bring light appetizers and libations to share.
